Pappy's is one of those treasures that you have to be in "in the know" about. It's a little farm (okay, maybe not so little - the property is HUGE) located in Oviedo, Florida... Which just happens to be 20 minutes from where John and I live. Score!
It's a simple premise- they grow em', you pick em. Upon arriving you go see Pappy (?) or, at least a very nice man that was dressed a bit like Freddy Krueger with a much sweeter smile and disposition. He gives you a box to put the berries in along with advice on which ones to look for and how to pick. When you're done you bring your haul to the lovely ladies in the little red cart to get the weight. At $2.50 a lb, it's a decent deal. Strawberry season starts now and lasts until May. Starting in April you can visit Pappy's to pick blueberries .... Visions of fresh blueberry pancakes fill my head. Yum!!!
The farm is a down to earth, happy place. Fresh air, sunshine and smiling faces surrounded by lush, natural Florida landscape. I couldn't help but admire the wild palms and the oaks dripping with moss. I also noted a lot of folks like myself coming out for photo opps (other bloggers, perhaps? :) ) For more information on location and hours click the link above.
Oh that sounds and looks wonderful. Thanks for bringing the essence of summer to grey old England! xx
ReplyDeletesounds like a wonderful place! wish i can find a similar place in the va area. strawberry picking is something i definitely want to do this year!
ReplyDeleteNo joke I'm sitting here eating a bowl of strawberries, but ooo i wish I had picked them here!! My grandparents live in Conneticut and there was a farm where we would spend hours picking fruits and veggies. It really is a lot of fun! So jealous right now that it's strawberry season and they are ready to be picked!!! I'm liking Florida more and more with each of your posts!! =)

I love that red farm cart with 'strawberries' on the side! There is nothing sweeter than fresh picked strawberries. 'Freddy Kruger' made me laugh! Looks like a fun day! xx
ReplyDeleteThis looks so cute, and such a fun time! My parents would take our family blueberry picking every summer and it was always a fun time. I probably ate more off the bushes than i picked haha. And these are such happy, bright pictures!

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog:)
I grew up south of Lake Okeechobee and lived on a farm with my dad down near the Everglades in Devil's Garden (outside of Immokallee). I remember those strawberries so well, this brought back so many memories and my homesickness, but in a good way! I love my new PNW home but I do miss that sunshine! Nice to have a Florida blog to read!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds fun . Plus these strawberries are so fresh and beautiful :)

We used to have those farms here in South Florida, but they have all been bulldozed over for gated communities. I loved seeing your photos. It brought back memories of Florida down here back in the day!
