Thrifted: Girly Things

Handkerchiefs...

They're extremely feminine, extremely southern and remind me of my mom who always used to carry one that smelled faintly of her perfume... She kept them tucked away in her purse, never actually using them. I think they just kind of made her feel pretty.

I guess it's a bit like lace undergarments, even if no one else knows, you know, and that alone is enough to make you feel more attractive.

So when I spot vintage handkerchiefs while out thrifting, especially marked 75% off of the already cheap price, I grab them. Like my mom, I never actually use them... I just keep them nearby which is enough to make me feel ultra girly. The best part, my daughters share the same love for these dainty, embroidered pieces of linen as I do... It's become a sort of tradition.

To my thrifting friends: what items do you always seek out because they remind you of someone special or your youth?

  3. Beautiful hankies, Wendy. I snatch up these lovelies also when I am out thrifting. I buy quilts when I find them at a good price... remind me of my grandmother. Happy New Year!

  5. Lovely. I always have a hankie on me, even in male-mode. They are something I adopted in my twenties and decided to keep. These vintage examples are lovely.

  8. I have a hard time passing up anything that has lace on it and an even harder time passing up any form of handkerchiefs! I used to have ones of my great-grandmother and seriously I have to find them. There is just something so dainty about them...I am a definitely a modern feminist, hear me roar, but I still wish handkerchiefs and lace was still more prevalent. Maybe I need to move down to the south! I would love to do a Southern Belle re-enactment one day. I just wouldn't open my mouth because my New York accent would TOTALLY give me away! =P

Ohhh I have to thank you SO MUCH for the seashells!!! They are absolutely beautiful and ironically so smoother than New Jersey seashells! I was sick as a dog yesterday staring out at our latest snow storm and I got that sweet suprise! It made me feel so much better! Thank you!!! *BIG HUGS*

    1. Anytime girly! I realized that I was in such a rush to get out the door that I forgot to add a note, sorry about that. Regardless, enjoy them! :)

  9. I love your mom's idea of leaving them in your purse for a lovely feminine feeling. I will have to keep an eye out for some vintage handkerchiefs. :)

  10. hey Wendy! I had a handkerchief just like that yellow one with the roses. I swear it was just like mine. I think my sister got all of Mom's handkerchief when Mom passed. I will have to ask her, huh?

  11. So lovely to hang onto these beautiful old-fashioned hankies. When I was growing up my parents had a bar in our rumpus room (remember that word?) so I'm a sucker for 1950's and 60's cocktail paraphernalia.

  15. Hey there! So glad you popped by! You have an outstanding blog! Handkerchiefs remind me of my gram...I too believe that they make you feel elegant. Yours are lovely! Mine is teacups. My gram and great aunts had the coolest collection of teacups from all over the world! I'm looking forward to journeying along!

  16. I think old hankies are so pretty.....ironed and folded in a basket, they would look lovely. I've even seen them framed and put on a wall. My Mom used to love them, too! Yours are sooooo pretty. Susan

  19. Oh, so pretty! I love vintage linens. My Mom used to collect them and use them as napkins when she had 'us girls' over for a visit. There were 5 daughters and she always put out her best china with vintage linens. I miss her. xx

  21. Those hankies are lovely, as is your story.

I collect cuckoo clocks and garden gnomes in memory of my grandmother. Her garden was a marvellous place full of little characters for us to play with and she had a cuckoo clock in her hall which used to chime on the hour. We would run out to watch the little birdie. xx

  22. Thanks for following me! Your banana bread recipe is making me hungry, but I wanted to comment on the handkerchiefs. I love handkerchiefs, too, and I have three, but don't really use them. Well, actually, I use one that was given to me by my grandparents decades ago - a Valentine's hankie with hearts and rosebuds all over. I wrap my heart locket (gift from my parents) in it so the chain won't tangle. I've done that for years, but I may have to get my three hankies out, wash them, scent them, and start keeping them closer so I can enjoy them more!
